The RIES Mentoring Service is a unique volunteering service that matches
refugees with volunteer mentors. These matches then embark
on a mentoring relationship. The purpose of this work is for the mentor to offer support and
friendship to the mentee, whilst helping him or her to meet
their personal goals. The aims of the volunteering service are:
-
To help
refugees expand their understanding of British culture
-
To provide
refugees with an opportunity to practise and develop
their English language.
-
To work
towards breaking down barriers and misunderstanding
between cultures
-
To help
refugees to discover and make full use of their new city
and community
Both mentor and
mentee receive full training before being matched, and
during their relationship receive support from a designated
Co-ordinator. Travel expenses are reimbursed.
Mentors spend
around 5 hours per month with their mentee over a period of
up to ten months, taking part in various activities that are
centred around the needs of the mentee, these can include
cultural days out, visiting the library to practise English
or even just chatting in a local café.
CfED are
currently recruiting new volunteer mentors in the West
Midlands, including Walsall, Dudley, Sandwell, Birmingham,
Wolverhampton, Coventry and in Stoke on Trent,
Staffordshire.
